Marvelous…haunting
I approached this DVD with caution, never having seen the film before and noting its three-star review here, but I came away incredibly satisfied.

I partially blame the trailers for this film for the disappointment expressed in some of these reviews (the rest of the blame rests simply on the closed minds of today’s moviegoers). When I first saw the trailer I expected a terrifying occult film filled with demons and supernatural happenings. That would’ve been an easier film to make. What I saw, however, was so much better.

This is a slow-paced film, which moves along quietly, gracefully, and keeps you glued to the screen for its entirety. Cast performances are all wonderful, especially Depp, of course, who continues to choose the most interesting projects in film today. There are no grotesque demons and very few special effects. Polanski’s subtle touch creates images that etch themselves in your mind nonetheless. One example is the wheelchair-bound Baroness careening across the room to burst into her office (don’t want to spoil any more). Suffice it to say that certain images in this film are as terrifyingly memorable as Kubrick’s twins in THE SHINING, for example.

Although this film is not a “horror” film by any standards, I found myself genuinely scared throughout. Evil is always just around the corner. You never doubt its existence and you’re terrified of the moment when it may reveal itself.

The Prince of Darkness comes into his own
Empty your mind of all preconceived ideas about this film before viewing, and it will be a very worthwhile experience. It is not a horror film. It is definitely an occult film that takes a fresh look at the old theme of His Unholiness making an appearance on earth. The Ninth Gate has a superior cast who perform their parts well under the direction of a director with a worldwide reputation for genius, especially when it comes to depicting the darker matters of the mind. The film is what you would expect from such a combination of human talent. The strictly human characters display themselves in such a way that it becomes possible to read their minds and feel their motives. In so doing, the necessity of the one supernatural character becomes abundantly clear.

Johnny Depp plays Curso, a dealer in and locator of rare books who, as Balkan (Langella’s character) points out, is worthy of trust because his loyalty can be bought. Balkan pays the right price to have Depp travel from New York to Lisbon and Paris in search of the two other copies of a rare book Balkan has recently acquired–one that was supposedly co-authored by the Devil and one of his most loyal disciples, the latter of whom was burned at the stake in the 1600’s for his own loyalty. Balkan insists that he thinks only one copy of the book is genuine, and he wants to make sure his copy is the one.

It is obvious that Depp has no idea what he is getting himself into, but for all his cynical disregard of humanity, he becomes the “innocent” in this story, because he is the one person who becomes aware and admits early on that he has no idea what he has gotten into. Balkan says he obtained his copy of the book in a true sale from the owner just before the owner committed suicide. However, the former owner’s widow insists that the book is hers and becomes the first person trying to kill Curso in an effort to get it back–after the best of feminine wiles don’t get the job done. At this point Curso’s “guardian angel”, whom he calls Green Eyes, enters the picture in the guise of a wandering college student whose appearances at first inspire distrust and apprehension until she begins the rather pleasant habit of repeatedly saving Curso’s life.

The mysterious “keys” that will open the Ninth Gate and let the Devil break through are contained in the set of nine woodcuts within each book. The woodcuts each contain interesting jumbled adaptations of various images from the Tarot’s Major Arcana–combinations that give a clue to anyone familiar with the cards and their meanings that everyone’s traditional ideas regarding the occult were either dead wrong all along or they are about to undergo–forgive the expression–one hell of a change. Curso notes that there are significant variations in the woodcuts in each volume of the three existing copies of the book. Apparaently some were drawn by the Devil himself and some by his advocate.

Curso also notes that he is now being hounded not only by the avaricious widow and her hit man, but also by Balkan, who seems to know his every move, not to mention having knowledge about the violent deaths of the owners of the other two manuscripts. Finally it is revealed that Balkan and the widow are involved in a literal battle to the death to become the Master who controls the Ninth Gate and the group of Devil worshippers who are this century’s congregation of those who have been waiting for that Master since the book was first printed 350 years earlier.

There is humor throughout this film, providing necessary comic relief at some very tense moments. That humor is nowhere more evident than in the scene in which the widow (who has managed to temporarily regain Balkan’s copy of the book) is leading the gathering of pathetic self-styled Satanists in an even more pathetic, sterotypical black mass. The scene at its opening is so mundane, you want to groan. Then as it progresses, you realize that is part of the director’s intentional imagery to show how stupid the theories about conjuring up and dealing with Old Scratch have always been.

This guy is supposed to be the all powerful Prince of Darkness, right? This is the guy who can take your soul into hell for all eternity if you agree to the arrangement. And yet throughout history it is believed that if you draw a circle around a pentagram on the ground or floor and stand in it, then mutter a few incantations, the Devil will appear with his forked tail between his legs and do whatever you ask. This is the powerful adversary of the Almighty? Polanski has a very refreshing spin on that idea.

In The Ninth Gate we see Satan as a stronger contender–one perfectly capable of appointing his “chosen one” among men. Tired, evidently, of insulting requests to preside as Master of Ceremonies at orgies and to give individual megalomaniacs the power to rule the world, the Devil has decided to run the show himself and to confer the honors of being his Commander in Chief on a person who has proven himself a champion on the battlefield of mundane evil.

As for that “obscure” ending, we see Curso walking alone toward the last eerie combination of Tarot symbols–The Star (hope) imposed over the twin towers of The Moon (a card generally having to do with the deepest and sometimes most sinister elements of the occult). One tower is behind the other, giving the appearance of the two merging into one Tower (symbol of total destruction). Evidently the party games are over.

A richly textured, beautifully filmed and well-acted modern gothic tale. I highly recommend it.

One big adventure for Depp into the unknown
I watched this not knowing what was in store for me, and at the end of the movie, I was completely in awe of this powerful story. Johnny Depp’s acting is good, but his somewhat scrawny body and his aged looks just weren’t the reason why this movie kept me in my seat throughout. No doubt the story isn’t very realistic - its basically about the forces - mainly the evil forces - in life - greed, lust, power… and Johnny Depp plays an underhanded book dealer who is employed by Balkan (Langella) to go on a trip to Europe to research an ancient Satanic book’s authenticity. This entire movie is about Johnny Depp taking one long and life-threatening adventure tackling issues beyond what he normally avoids in real life.

Emmanuelle Seigner (and this is just some gossip for you - she’s Polanski’s wife in real-life!) plays the mysterious woman who appears to help Depp everytime he’s faced with a life-or-death situation, and this casts suspicion on her true identity - is she human or is she not? What is she? These are all the questions that Polanski poses to the viewer as you go through the film watching Depp go through his journey which seems to be like a cat-and-mouse chase between him and the greedy people who are after the book’s secrets. Seigner is completely mesmerising in her own right. She is very interesting to watch and so charismatic - and rightly so because Polanski filmed her in such a way that drenched her in an even deeper aura of mystery. Olin is good too, she is very convincing in a somewhat shallow role as an out-and-out money-grubbing chic French tramp who bites (literally).

There are certainly loads of questions left unanswered in the movie, but I think this is the intention of the director who wants you the viewer to make out the story how you want to see it. If you like a movie that features a great cast (albeit not your usual “teen heart-throb” Hollywood stars) shot in an European countryside backdrop, and a theme about the “dark forces” that leaves you thinking a bit - then you’re sure to enjoy watching this. This movie has good pace. There’s always something happening around the corner for Depp, and then there’s always the question of “Who exactly is that *girl*?” I loved this whole movie and would recommend it to the right person.

Discription might be a little misleading, but…
As you can see from the customer picture attached, you only receive the standard blade. The bevel blade is an “option”.
The standard blade is what I wanted when I bought this item and its size is great for making small keepsake boxes and other items on a smaller scale. You can feel the quality as it slides and locks down accurately. Highly recommended!

If I could get this surgically attached I would
Like the other reviewer said the picture is misleading but that rests on amazon not the Starrett tool company. As the title of the review says if I could I would, I use it that much.

PLEASE READ!! Regarding description.
you may find people poorly reviewing this product because Amazon had pictured the same square along with two additional auxilliary bevel blades. As might seem appropriate they reviewed it lower because they were expecting more for their money, or were ticked at Amazon for not doing their homework. I reported the pic to Amazon and now they have the correct item shown. Rest assured so far I think everyone has agreed the square is a great product. Anyone can report a picture, so if you ever see something inaccurate, please do so, because Amazon is very interested in fixing these via our feedback.
On another note, the old picture showing 3 different blades instead of just 1, is an available product from Starrett as the “13f” with graduated , bevel, and drill grinding blades, and explains the old (incorrect) picture.

Rockwell Quality [yes variable speeds]
OMG, the Rockewell SoniCrafter is great. I was looking for a corded oscillating tool and looked at the Fein Multitasker and blades, but it is just way too expensive to purchase for my needs. So I bought the Dremel and the Rockwell to compare side by side…

The $100 Dremel is lighter and a bit smaller but the buzz the motor makes compared to the Rockwell motor [a little bit heavier and slightly bigger] which humms smoothly is like comparing a Vespa scooter to a Victory street bike.

Since the basic Rockwell is only $20 more than the Dremel and the extra blades are about the same price, there was no question about going for the quality/durability of a Rockwell.

The only convenience problem that I can foresee is getting replacement blades:
Dremel is carried by big box hardware stores; hobbyists who do crafts on the spur of the moment and do not need to rip open walls, will appreciate the around-the-corner convenience.
Rockwell is carried by speciality woodworking stores or the internet; the Home Proj. kind of guys have to plan ahead before ripping into a wall for remodeling. So ordering parts in advance should be a no brainer.

I also really liked the Rockwell case, it is created with niches and screw-downs to hold lots of blades/attachments in place.

I looked at the Bosch 12v battery operated version, and that would have been a good choice but I do not want to have numerous 18v tool systems and chargers for the various power hand tools that I use. I read that the Bosch delivers 20 min of battery power and I might need more time than that between charges.

All four tools mentioned above have variable speeds pretty much the same: 10,000 - 21,000 opm. The Bosch details that I read boasted of 5,000 - 20,000 opm, but I do not know if I need to go that slow. If I did I would have researched more into the rare Praxon version of oscillating tool, which is reportedly underpowered and equivalent to size and weight of the Dremel.

Poor Customer Service, mediocre long-term quality
I wish I had, had the opportunity to actually use one of these that had seen extended service before I actually bought one.

For the first few months the Sonicrafter worked OK. Then the mediocre workmanship started to show up. I sent numerous emails, and made several phone calls to Rockwell. They never answered or returned any of them. In desperation I called the sales number on the infomercial. The sales rep took all my information and said I would get a call the next day. Needless to say I did not.

In brief my problems have been as follows:

1. The Allen Screw that secures the blades now vibrates loose, as a consequence I had to stop to re-tighten the blades every few minutes.
2. The front end gets VERY hot. I mean hot enough you can’t hold it! It will deform thin plastic sheeting such as the vapor barrier on wall insulation.
3. The blades are very poorly made. They dulled quickly. I don’t know what kind of blades they use for the demonstration videos, but it certainly is not the same as what they sent me. Certainly the nails they show the unit cutting must all be cheap non-ferrous metals.
4. The owners manual that came with the unit must have been written by someone for whom English is a second language.

Supposedly there is a two year warranty on the product. Good luck getting Rockwell to honor that. They essentially have no customer support to whom you can talk to get a RMA number or arrange a replacement.

As a result, my unit is now an expensive paperweight. It does have one useful purpose. I show it to my friends and associates to let them use it if they are thinking of buying one. After using it no one I know wants anything to do with this product.

I ended up buying a Fein Multimaster. More expensive? Certainly. But I only had to buy it once, and it works as advertised. You do in fact get what you pay for.

In summary. Initially the Sonicrafter worked as advertised, but it did not hold up to long term use over a 3 month period. My personal feeling is that the high heat generated by this tool coupled with the high frequency oscillations were more than the cheap materials used in building it could stand when used over time. This may work for a hobbyist making wooden models. but for serious work, it just did not stand up. Customer service was oriented at making sure the customer has no way to actually exercise his right to use the Warrenty.

I purchased this unit 2 weeks ago. Take note, this version, $119.95, does not have variable speed.

Fein’s patent ran out, so that is why we are now seeing some competition. The Dremel version does not have a blade that will cut nails which is also true of the Multitool ($59.95) from Harbor Frieght. The Rockwell claims it has a blade that will cut nails a useful feature if you are disassembly something with nails or screws like a countertop.

All of the competition uses a bolt to attach the blades which must be tighten properly for the blades not to fall off. The new Fein units have a new patented blade attachment system that is pretty fool proof.

So for home use I would recommend the Rockwell over the Dremel until Dremel brings out a nail cutting blade. If money is not an object buy the Fein Multimaster.

My personal idea is that for this note, and the amount of special features thrown in, this dvd is a dependable bang for your buck. If you are a Transformers fan, this is a must steal. If you wanna have a Transformers history lesson and score hyped up before the movie release, this is also a pleasurable consideration.

If you belong to none of the people in the category above, you might wanna pause away. But this is darn marvelous entertainment whichever procedure you gape at it. This deserves 5 stars, no doubt!

No doubt hidden in the 271 reviews that precedes my hold you will bag many of my ideas and thoughts about this movie. No matter, I level-headed feel obligated to allotment what this movie meant and continues to mean to me. To open, credit must be given to the composer and artist of this film. While, although sometimes a bit cheesy (ie. that same choo-choo-train sewer music playing whenever unicron appeares, which is borrowed from from ROCKY IV), the music does energize the film at times and makes for a expansive soundrack. Next, despite what some others have said, the animation for this film was gigantic for its time. I mean, who could ever forget that scene when Optimus decides, “Megatron must be stopped–no matter what the cost,” and leaps into action blasting away. That’s the stuff titanic memories are made of. Conversely, however, the dwelling of this movie made perfect sense when I was ten years feeble, but now seems a bit broken-down. But what can you examine? After all, it IS–or WAS–a childrens cartoon. More than anything I assume this film represents the destroy of an era. While kids collected have gleaming imaginations and continue to fancy cartoons, I wonder if they will obsess over them (running home from school to develop determined you didn’t miss a shrimp) like we did. In these days of powerfull computers, DVDs, and Wallmart(hehe), I don’t know if things will ever be the same. Bottom line, I fancy this movie not only for what it is( a childrens cartoon), but for what we made it( a record that defines a generation) . Autobots, transform and roll out.

Our whole family enjoys this indicate. We have family members that dazzling well shroud all age groups and we all delight in it. But then, we aren’t the kind of people who regain happiness and enjoyment in watching people effect conflict, call names, come by ways to cause distress and behave in other unhealthy and unproductive behaviors. This demonstrate is about ordinary people living normal lives in an unique circumstance. There is something for the adults, the teen, the elementary old child. There isn’t mammoth literature interested, there’s nothing extraordinarily ground breaking, it’s unprejudiced nice, respectable entertainment that can, at times, be conventional to succor a family member deal with something that is going on in our nice, slow, normal lives.

If you don’t devour Rotund House, don’t steal it. Simple as that. But if you do like it, it’s a fun dvd plot. Can’t wait for the 2nd season and the kill of Jesse’s mullet!

The theme song is a longer version, with more images during the them. Personally, I would have preferred the song sung the same device as the re-runs, however it is nice to gaze more images of the characters than usual.

There are extras- commentary, and trivia. And these episodes are uncut, there are some scenes I don’t deem I ‘ve ever seen before (and I’ve seen every episode many times)

My area came with a bonus disc with an episode of Growing Grief and of Step by Step. Some worn sets will arrive with it, but I don’t assume novel ones will.

Perfect for getting that last drop of wine that dried to the bottom of your delicate wine glasses and champagne flutes, also great for cleaning the inside of glass carafes and thermoses. Soft cotton tips won’t scratch or mar surfaces. I’ve found them to be indispensable.

Handy bottle brushes
Searched and searched for a bottle brush small enough to get down into my oil bottles to clean them out. Could only find large bottle brushes where I live. I found these brushes on Amazon and they are the perfect size to fit down into the necks of smaller bottles I use for oil, vinegar and such. Happy with the purchase. They arrived quickly and in good condition. They seem to be sturdy and do the job.

Terrific solution to an ordinary problem
These bottle brushes are narrow enough to fit into a narrow neck bottle. Unlike a toothbrush, my previous mode of cleaning such bottles, these have a little sponge, attached at a right angle to the bottom, so one can really clean the floor of the bottle as well. A great solution to a simple, ordinary problem.

This movie reflects on the “frosty war” days when Soviet Union was regarded as oppressed, and frigid to human feelings. I remember walking to the theater (all of two blocks) and paying a whopping 50 cents to survey this movie, and I have never forgotten it to this very day. I would voice my kids about it but rarely was it on television while they were growing up. I actually found a DVD in THE DOLLAR STORE of all places and showed it to my kids which of course they view was ridiculous. However, they are grown know and one of my sons told me he was watching it on TV and showed it to his wife. I am purchasing three copies so that they can all add it to their DVD collection and pass on to their children. Cult classic and terrible FX at it’s best!!

Hey fellow athletes. If you are using one of the new coded Polar WearLink chest straps, it has replaceable batteries. This is the one you want, and not the standard CR 2025, which is much more common. The size is just different enough that the CR 2025 will not work (trust me!).

Battery works well (of course- its a Energizer) and the chest strap is working like a charm again. Plus the two pack given you a spare for the future. They are pricey little buggers though.

This is a film about man in extremis. Retreating, defeated batallions of Japanese soldiers in WWII on the island of Leyte in the Phillipines bag themselves sinking ineluctably toward barbarism. The wounded, the desperate, the starving–all are paraded before us in Ichikawa’s pitiless, sometimes bitterly ironic pageant of man’s descent toward his basest impulses. The fires of the slow of the title refer to distant smoke from fires on the horizon that the soldiers glimpse from time to time. The fires are symbols of hope of release from the carnage and despair surrounding the soldiers. The final irony is how groundless too this hope turns out to be. All are caught in the web of deceit, of trickery, of brutality that man in his faded space so easily reverts to. Objective about every sacred cow–brotherhood, respect, honor–is refuted. Man is both a figurative and literal cannibal, preying on his fellow soldiers, his friends. The film is harshly realistic yet surreal and nightmarish–barren landscapes of corpses, dung-eating madmen, men crawling like beasts over a trench. Ichikawa’s images have a barbaric splendor and dreamlike aura, reinforced by the dissonant, percussive soundtrack with its echoes of Bartok. Not a film for those unwilling to face the extent of man’s capacity for monstrosity head on; for others, it’s a harrowing, deeply unsettling experience.

Over 25 years ago, I was watching a Public TV site on a Saturday afternnon in Milwaukke. They were showing a movie called “Fires on the Uninteresting” and I watched it more out of curiosity than intent. Although the narrate on my conceal was fuzzy, I gradually became mesmerized as I understood what the movie was all about. The film scared to where I bought and read the book (by the same title) by Shohei Ooka and later his worthwhile book “The Shade of Blossoms”. I finally had the chance to look the movie again on IFC and was as impressed as I was the first time. It was a positive portray this time with subtitles.

“Fires on the Tiresome” tells the narrative of Tamura, a Japanese soldier in the Philipines in February, 1945; a time when defeat was turning into chaos. We behold the leisurely metamorphis from civilized soldier to desperate animal as Tamura searches for a path to hope. It is a disturbing film but it is an educational film as well because of the contrivance it allows us to expect the other side of victory.

I have always been sharp about the demise of the defeated sides in WWII. Both fought well past the point of no return and suffered through improbable destruction until only a skeleton of its’ empire remained to surrender. What must that have been like to experience? I have read books by Heinrich Boll that have given me something of an opinion and other authors have as well. I recently finished an top-notch book entitled “Japan at War: An Oral History”. The eyewitness accounts of the disintegrating forces in the Philipines and other places fit the descriptions display in “Fires on the Lifeless”. It is a disturbing portrait of a world of near-anarchy where survival is about the only instinct remaining. Truth IS stranger than fiction.

“Dr. Gerson found that the underlying problems of all cancer patients are toxicity and deficiency. He had to overcome both these difficulties. He found that one of the famous features of his therapy had to be the hourly administration of novel vegetable juices. When the high levels of nutrients re-enter tissues, toxins accumulated over many years are forced into the blood stream. The toxins are then filtered out by the liver. Some of the blunt, uncompromising statements this movie makes are determined to glean up the medical profession’s collective nose. Too terrible for them, for Dr. Gerson was just. And as for Charlotte, his daughter, her entire life has been immersed in healing people, first learning while assisting her father, and later teaching his arrangement to the world.

I personally have seen what the Gerson program can do for a terminally ill cancer patient. I have been called upon to relieve in a couple of high-profile but last exiguous cases. One patient was a distinguished sports figure. He was given some months to live and was not jubilant about it, as he was peaceful in his 50s. He asked what his best shot would be for inoperable, untreatable metastasized cancer. I told him: the Gerson therapy. He did it, not in its entirety, but with enthusiasm. And, he lived considerably longer that he was expected to. But what really impressed me was the dramatic improvement in his energy level. From fatigue and weakness, he went instantly to a vibrant life, commencing from the very week he started the program. He maintained a more-than-full schedule for so long that even people who knew he was sick forgot that he was sick.

Years later, people that never knew of my involvement in the matter would bring up his name, invariably recalling how active he was and how genuine he looked until, almost as a surprise, he died.

I saw a similar level of success with a prominent Original York businessman, the owner of a chain of stores and afflicted with untreatable liver cancer. He began to do powerful, but by no means all, of the Gerson program, and was subsequently able to extensively go the world with his family. He lived years longer than expected, with a high quality of life confirmed by all who saw him.

Looking only at these two patients, wanton critics of Gerson’s plan might consider that, without complete and unequivocal cure, there is puny to crow about. Such a opinion is unproductive, for neither of these patients followed the Gerson program completely. It is a tough sell, even to a person with a terminal diagnosis.

Why is this?

Ignorance and arrogance earn a unpleasant combination, and “unusual” medicine has been guilty of both for decades. Political physicians did not label Dr. Gerson. In fact, they publicly condemned him. The news media, and some so-called “consumer” websites, have been their willing accomplices. The misinformation they spew to this day is fraught with fabricated frights of natural therapies, while in the same breath they spew forth the wonders of pharmaceutical drugs. When is the last time you saw a proper mention of the Gerson program in the newspaper or on TV? Since pharmacological doctors have no sure-fire cure for cancer (an understatement if there ever was one), they might at least benefit a winning horse. According to peer-reviewed research, ragged chemotherapy contributes 2.3% to five year survival in Australia and a mere 2.1% in the US. (Morgan, Ward and Barton. Clinical Oncology, 2004. 16: 549-560) The Gerson come has been shown, for over six decades, to significantly improve both quality of life and length of life in the sickest, the most hopeless, of cancer patients. Many people have been completely cured on the Gerson therapy. Not all, but many. Far, far more than with chemo.

Some years ago I watched a video tape of a Gerson patients’ “reunion.” On stage were people from all walks of life, and most were advanced in age. One after the other they spoke of the cancer they were diagnosed with three, ten, or twenty years ago. All were recovered. Dr. Gerson was the reason. You cannot glance such an event and fail to be moved.

Charlotte Gerson is 87 now (2009) and fit as a fiddle. I’ve met her many times. She glows with energy and vivaciousness and life. But what is considerable more principal, so do the colossal majority of Gerson patients. I race you to study this movie.
